Stolen Relief Supplies. Canadian police arrested and charged a man in connection with the theft of millions of dollars’ worth of Hurricane Melissa relief supplies. These supplies were destined for Jamaica from Canada last year.
Varinder Dhillon, 40, from Brampton, faces multiple charges, including breaking and entering, theft of over CA$5,000, possession of property obtained by crime. In addition, he is charged with several breaches of probation orders. Notably, these charges relate to stolen relief supplies in this high-profile case.
The Peel Regional Police announced the charges in a statement on Thursday, April 16, 2026. In their announcement, the focus was on the incident involving the stolen supplies intended for hurricane relief.
Investigators report that Dhillon is currently on probation for similar offenses. The authorities had also prohibited him from driving indefinitely.
According to reports, on December 3, 2025, at approximately 5:10 a.m., Dhillon allegedly broke into a secured storage facility near Derry Road East and Goreway Drive in Mississauga. This theft involved large amounts of stolen relief supplies meant for disaster recovery.
The stolen relief supplies included clothing and non-perishable items. Charitable individuals has prepared the items for shipment to Jamaica to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
The Peel Regional Police’s Commercial Auto Crime Bureau launched an extensive investigation, which identified Dhillon as the suspect. As a result, authorities recovered more than CA$1 million (approximately J$115.2 million) worth of stolen property during the investigation. This recovery highlights the scope of the stolen relief supplies operation.
“The authorities have returned the stolen relief supplies to their rightful owners. The owners have since repackaged the items and shipped them to Kingston, Jamaica, for distribution in hurricane relief,” reported the Peel Regional Police.
On March 11, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a residence in Brampton, which led to Dhillon’s arrest. He remains in police custody as investigations continue, particularly regarding the stolen relief supplies case.
