PNP Protests Against Chung’s Appointment as FID Chief. In Jamaica, on Monday, June 2, 2025, hundreds of supporters of the opposition People’s National Party (PNP) gathered at Heroes Circle. They were against Prime Minister Andrew Holness appointing Dennis Chung. He was appointed as the Chief Technical Director of the Financial Investigations Division (FID).
The opposition questioned Chung’s appointment, accusing him of bias and raising concerns about his qualifications.
Flanked by a heavy security presence, hundreds of PNP supporters joined their party leadership outside the Ministry of Finance. The PNP protest began shortly after 9 a.m.
Many PNP members arrived in cars, coaster buses, and on bicycles, gathering with placards bearing anti-government slogans. Some placards included personal attacks directed at Dennis Chung.
The enthusiastic supporters cheered when they saw party officials, including Mark Golding, Dr. Dayton Campbell, and Senators Peter Bunting and Donna Scott Motley, joining the gathering.
Former PNP President Dr. Peter Phillips and long-time PNP member Dr. Omar Davies also made an appearance.
According to unconfirmed reports, employees from the Ministry of Finance also participated in the PNP’s protest.
PNP Protests and raised concerns over Dennis Chung’s qualifications for an FID Role
In his speech to the crowd, PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell claimed the authorities allegedly changed the requirements for the Chief Technical Director position to facilitate Dennis Chung’s appointment.
Opposition Leader Mark Golding addressed the crowd, stating that Chung’s appointment represented a decline in good governance.
The PNP has pledged to continue its advocacy and hinted at potential further actions if its concerns are not addressed.
Meanwhile, a small group of supporters of the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) heeded their leader, Andrew Holness’, call and organized a counter-protest on Wild Street in downtown Kingston, Jamaica
Assistant Commissioner Michael Phipps, head of Area Four Police, reported on the PNP protest. He also reported on the JLP counter-protest at National Heroes Circle. Both proceeded without incident. He described the crowd as manageable.
