Improving Court Infrastructure: Urgent Call by Senator Donna Scott Mottley

Senator Donna Scott Mottley, the opposition spokesperson for the Justice portfolio, has emphasized the urgent need for the government to improve the working conditions in which the judiciary and court staff are now working.

Recent reports have shed light on significant deficiencies at the Kinston and St. Andrew Parish Court in Half Way Tree, as well as the St. Catherine Parish Court in Spanish Town. The unsanitary bathroom facilities in these courts pose serious health risks to both staff and the public.

Additionally, the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston is grappling with a pest and termite infestation. Many departments and offices within the Supreme Court lack functional air conditioning, leading to uncomfortable working conditions in oppressive heat.

Senator Scott Mottley stressed the importance of providing the judiciary and court staff with safe, sanitary environments that support their critical roles in upholding justice.

She expressed deep concern over the current neglect of the country’s court facilities, emphasizing the need for the government to show greater commitment to the justice sector.

Senator Scott Mottley urgently appeals for the renovation and maintenance of bathroom facilities at the St. Andrew and St. Catherine parish courts, elimination of pest and termite infestations at the Supreme Court, and the installation of air conditioning units in all departments and offices at the Supreme Court.

Court Administration Division Responsibility.

Responding to Senator Donna Scott Mottley’s call for improved court infrastructure, the Justice Minister pointed out that the Court Administration Division is responsible for maintenance.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck.

Mr. Chuck stated that the Court Administration Division, assigned maintenance duties by former minister Mark Golding, has the necessary equipment to improve court conditions. He acknowledged procurement issues as an obstacle despite having resources.

He also noted that the Division rented a space from the UDC to tackle sanitary problems at Spanish Town and has urged the UDC to fix the unsanitary bathroom conditions. Additionally, he suggested that the Ministry of Justice will take over the complex to remedy the situation.

The effectiveness of these measures in addressing the court facilities’ maintenance and sanitation issues is yet to be determined.
