A Police Corporal Hospitalized After Gun Attack in Portmore, St Catherine

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, a police corporal was taken to the hospital after sustaining injuries from a shooting in Portmore, St Catherine. Reports indicate that at approximately 11:40 a.m., the corporal was conducting business at West Henderson Boulevard in Greater Portmore when he observed two armed men exiting a Nissan motor vehicle and opening fire on a taxi operator.

The corporal bravely confronted the attackers, prompting them to swiftly retreat. It was later revealed that the gunmen had shot the policeman in his lower body during the exchange of gunfire. Despite his injuries, the officer managed to transport himself to the hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition.

The condition of the taxi operator, who was also reportedly injured, remains unknown. Separate investigations have been initiated by the Independent Commission of Investigations and the St Catherine South police.

Police have apprehended and charged a suspect involved in a 2021 shooting on Biscayne Road in Portmore, St Catherine, where two men were wounded. The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Darian Clarke, a photographer from Waterford, Portmore, St Catherine, surrendered to the authorities with his attorney on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

Clarke has been formally charged with two counts of wounding with intent, shooting with intent, and illegal possession of both a firearm and ammunition following an interrogation.

His court date is yet to be scheduled.

The police report that on the night of June 21, 2021, around 10:00 p.m., three men were returning from a party and walking along Biscayne Road when they spotted Clarke concealed in the bushes.

Clarke then stepped out, drew a firearm, and fired at the men, injuring two before fleeing the scene.

The victims reported the incident, prompting a police investigation.

Clarke remained at large until April 24, 2024, when he turned himself in.

A male motorcyclist, Donathon Dillon, also known as Dego, 48, died from injuries sustained in a collision with a cow on the Waterworks main road in Westmoreland on a Friday night in April 2024.

Dillon was thrown from his motorcycle upon impact with the cow and was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Over the past year, Westmoreland parish has seen several fatalities similar to this incident.

On July 30, 2023, Police Constable Tajay Ebanks, aged 22, was killed when his car hit a cow on Mango Hill main road in the parish.

Just three days afterward, 22-year-old Christopher Samuels perished in a collision with a cow on Bay Road main road in Westmoreland. The accident also resulted in hospitalization for two other individuals due to injuries.

The body of a 62-year-old man, reported to be a returning resident, was discovered decomposing in Falmouth Trelawny on Friday, 26, 2024.

The deceased has been identified by the police as Norman White, who was also known as ‘Andre’ and lived in Maxfield Heights. It has been reported that White also resided in Canada.

According to reports, citizens from the Maxfield Heights area of the parish found White’s body inside his house and promptly informed the police.

Upon the arrival of the authorities, White was found with his hands bound and his head partially severed.

The body has since been removed from the scene.

Ceejay Cunningham, who was honored with the Prime Minister’s National Youth Award for Excellence in Agriculture in 2022, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident in Davyton, Manchester, on Friday afternoon.

The 29-year-old farmer and tiler from Chantilly in Manchester, along with a 33-year-old man, was shot while working at a house under construction. The police reported that a series of gunshots were heard inside the house at around 5:45 PM.

Upon the police’s arrival, Mr. Cunningham was discovered with gunshot wounds to the head, and the other man sustained a wound to his right thigh. Unfortunately, Mr. Cunningham succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Mario Mitchell, the Councillor for the Bellefield Division, is urging the police to swiftly identify the individuals responsible for taking the life of this community role model.
