Police Trainee Arrested for Possession of Contraband in Hanover

A trainee police officer in Hanover has been placed in custody following the discovery of contraband in his possession at the Hanover Police Headquarters lock-up in Lucea.

The accused, identified as Constable Dalmar Smith, 28, a probationer working at Detention and Courts in the Hanover Division, was charged with violations of the Corruption Prevention Act on Friday, December 22, 2023, and awaits a court appearance date.

On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at approximately 7:10 p.m., Constable Smith, who was on duty at the Hanover headquarters cells, raised suspicion among his supervisors. Although a pat-down of Smith by his colleagues yielded no illicit items, a subsequent search of his white Toyota Fielder motorcar parked on the police station’s compound led to the discovery of a bag containing substances resembling ganja, along with several cigarettes, lighters, wrizzlers, tobacco, bleaching cream, bottles of rum, and cell phones.

Furthermore, the officer surrendered $25,000, reportedly admitting to receiving it as payment for delivering items to individuals in custody.

After the collection of statements and consultation with the legal officer of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Constable Smith has been formally charged by the authorities.

His court date is pending.
