A devastating multi-vehicle accident unfolded on Mandela Highway in St Catherine in the early hours of Saturday morning, December 16, 2023, resulting in the untimely death of a vibrant young woman.

The authorities have identified the deceased as Shadera Williams, a 23-year-old residing in Clarendon. Wrapped in immense sadness, the community mourns the loss of this promising individual.
According to the police report, the heart-wrenching incident occurred around 5:45 a.m. as Williams was traveling as a passenger in a Mercedes Benz SUV on her way to St Catherine. Tragically, the vehicle spiraled out of control, colliding with the rear of a parked truck before crashing into a Suzuki Vitara.

Williams sustained severe injuries in the collision and was rushed to the hospital but, devastatingly, succumbed to her injuries.
Fortunately, there were no reports of serious injuries among other individuals involved in the accident, as confirmed by the authorities.
While unverified reports suggest that Williams had recently returned from the United States, where she pursued her studies at the University of South Florida, the focus now shifts to understanding the circumstances that led to this fatal tragedy.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, who leads the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), expressed that investigations are underway to determine if the fatal accident resulted from dangerous driving.
“It has come to our attention that the vehicle had just passed a speed checkpoint at Six Miles. Our ongoing investigation aims to establish whether this unfortunate incident was a result of reckless driving that amounts to driving and causing death by dangerous driving or manslaughter,” he shared solemnly with Observer Online.
As the investigation progresses, the community mourns the loss of Shadera Williams, a bright young soul with a promising future. May her memory serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety for all who traverse the Mandela Highway and beyond.
