Westmoreland police pledged to blunt criminal activities in Negril.

Crime Roundup:

WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – Westmoreland police are taking decisive actions to enhance their presence and resources in the parish, particularly in the resort town of Negril, where a spate of robberies and criminal activities have occurred.

During a security meeting of the Negril Chamber of Commerce, Deputy Superintendent of Police Adrian Hamilton, who is in charge of operations for the parish, announced that the implementation of these measures would commence on Monday.

“We are committed to intensifying and bolstering our deployment of resources, as well as employing covert activities to address the immediate concerns of robberies and criminal activities. This approach will be sustained throughout the upcoming Christmas period and well into 2024. Our aim is to ensure that we start the new year on a positive note,” stated DSP Hamilton.

The purpose of the special chamber meeting was to discuss the current state of security in Negril, propose solutions, and implement them effectively. The meeting took place at the Negril Treehouse Hotel.

Among the initiatives to be implemented is an expansion of the quick response team in the parish, which will receive an undisclosed number of motorcycles from the 74 recently acquired by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). Starting on Monday, additional police officers will be stationed in the town. Stakeholders will also be provided with a dedicated WhatsApp number to enable direct communication with the police. In addition, resources from within the JCF, including the counter-terrorism and organized crime branch, will be mobilized. Furthermore, a joint police and military patrol will continue.

In recent times, a syndicate of criminals operating both within and outside the parish has orchestrated a series of robbery sprees and killings between Little London and Negril. Their targets have included bars, supermarkets, and other businesses.

On Friday, the police apprehended six men and one woman from an address in St James after intercepting them in the Little London area. DSP Hamilton assured attendees at the meeting that the police are resolute in their commitment to ending these criminal activities. Furthermore, three vehicles were seized.

“We are relentlessly pursuing the perpetrators of these recent criminal activities. Our team actively connects the dots, utilizes technology, and conducts thorough investigations. Rest assured, justice will be served not only to those responsible for these offenses but to anyone who poses a threat to our community,” declared DSP Hamilton, prompting a round of applause.
