Police arrested nine persons for alleged extortion activities in Half-Way Tree.

The St Andrew Central Police have apprehended nine individuals suspected of engaging in extortion activities against Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) operators in the Half Way Tree area of St Andrew.

According to authorities, law enforcement officers successfully conducted a meticulously planned sting operation on Thursday, October 19, 2023, resulting in the arrest of the alleged extortionists. These individuals are suspected not only of extortion but also of violating the Road Traffic Act and committing various other offenses.

Furthermore, it has been revealed by the Police that two of the apprehended suspects are of particular interest due to their alleged involvement in gang-related activities within the community.

The operation, which was meticulously executed by officers from the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) and the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC), was a direct response to the concerns raised by PPV operators regarding the increasing instances of extortion. These perpetrators demanded money from the operators in exchange for allowing them to conduct their business within the area.

It should be noted that aside from combating extortion, this operation was also designed to disrupt the criminal activities of gangs involved in various illicit acts, including extortion, within the Half-Way Tree vicinity.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) sternly reminds the public that extortion is a grave offense. Those found guilty of engaging in such unlawful activities will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

In light of these events, the JCF urgently encourages all members of the public to promptly report any incidents of extortion to the Police. The collective effort of citizens in combatting extortion is crucial for maintaining safety and security within our communities.
