Taxi operators in Westmoreland withdrew service on Monday over deplorable road conditions.

On Monday, September 11, 2023, school officials suspended classes at Frome Technical High School in Westmoreland due to the strike by taxi operators, which left several students and teachers stranded.

Disgruntled taxi operators withdrew their services and blocked sections of the Grange Hill to Savanna-la-Mar Main Road to protest against the deplorable road condition.

Frome High School’s provisional principal, Dorset Taylor, said teachers and canteen staff could not attend work due to the roadblock, so she had no choice but to dismiss school early.

She said students traveling from Negril and Savanna-la-Mar had to return home because they could not get transportation to school in time for classes.

Early Monday morning, taxi operators used old appliances and garbage to block the roadway. They called for the authorities to fix the bad roads and vowed to continue demonstrating if nothing gets done in the coming days.
