Jamaican woman indicted in the US for debt relief scam.

WASHINGTON (CMC) – The Department of Justice (DOJ) in the United States reported indicting a Jamaican female allegedly involved in a debt relief scam.

According to the DOJ release, Sereika Savariau, also known as Sereika Savariau-Goodison, 36, of Jamaica, appeared in US federal court on Friday, September 8, 2023. The authorities arraigned her on an eight-count indictment charging her with creating a series of fraudulent debt relief companies that tricked US victims into paying fees and disclosing personally identifying and sensitive information and identity documents to obtain debt relief, “which did not exist.

On December. 2, 2021, a US federal grand jury returned an eight-count sealed indictment charging Savariau with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud affecting a financial institution, four counts of wire fraud involving a financial institution, and three counts of aggravated identity theft.

The indictment states that, between 2016 and 2018, Savariau conspired with others to profit from fees paid by victims of fraudulent debt relief companies.

The indictment alleges that conspirators created and operated fraudulent businesses and websites that marketed and sold fraudulent debt relief services to members of the public.“Conspirators fraudulently misrepresented that members of the public could apply for and obtain thousands of dollars worth of debt relief on their outstanding, unpaid bills in the form of grants, all in exchange for payment of a service processing fee,” the indictment says.

Legendary Reggae artist Burning Spear demonstrated kindness when he pledged to assist in rebuilding a St. Ann’s Bay Infant School, which was damaged extensively when a blaze engulfed three classrooms, bathrooms, and a storeroom a couple of months ago.

Through Mytania Samuels, his representative in Jamaica, Spear donated $500,000 to administrators to help with their rebuilding program.

Other contributions came from Grammy winner Kabaka Pyramid, Julian Schmidt of the German website, Reggaeville, Uppsala Reggae Festival in Sweden, and the Sound System Club of London.

Since 2017, Debbie Parsons-Morris has been the school’s principal, with 171 students ages two to six. She welcomed the gesture from Spear, who is from St. Ann’s Bay.

Taxi operator shot while fighting with thugs attempting to rob him.

On Friday afternoon, September 8, 2023, thugs posing as passengers shot and injured a taxi operator as he locked horns with them in an alleged attempted robbery along Bay Farm Road, St. Andrew.

Olympic Gardens police stated that at about 12:10 p.m., two thugs posing as passengers boarded the taxi. One of the men later brandished a firearm and attempted to rob the taxi operator.

A struggle ensued, and the operator got shot in his left shoulder. As a result, he lost control of the vehicle and collided with another car.

The attackers panicked and reportedly ran from the taxi, leaving behind a magazine containing eight 9mm rounds of ammunition.

Bystanders alerted the police and handed over the ammunition. The police transported the taxi operator to the hospital.
