Police charged a St Catherine man with robbery and firearms breaches.

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – The St Catherine police charged a man with robbery and several breaches of the Firearms Act stemming from the alleged theft of a motor vehicle in Old Harbour Road, Spanish Town, St Catherine on Monday, July 17, 2023.

The police identified the accused as Canute McKenzie, age 27, a construction worker from Mineral Heights of Aluminum Way, Mineral Heights, Clarendon. 

The police charged McKenzie with robbery with aggravation, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, and unauthorized possession of ammunition.

According to reporting, on July 17, 2023, at about 9:45 am, the complainant drove his car to his place of employment, and before he descended, armed men drove up in a grey Nissan Tiida motor car, and McKenzie allegedly pointed a gun at him and robbed him of his motor car before escaping.

The complainant reported the matter to the police. And swift action by the police resulted in a police patrol intercepting the motor car along the Bog Walk bypass. 

The men exited the vehicle and made a hasty retreat–during which Mckenzie dropped an object. The police retrieved the object, which they identified as an Astra 9-millimeter pistol fitted with a magazine containing nine 9-millimeter rounds. 

The police subsequently arrested McKenzie. They charged him after the complainant pointed him out during an identification parade.

His court appearance date is pending.

Detectives from the St Catherine South Police held a 39-year-old man with a prohibited during a special operation in Bamboo Ridge District. St Catherine.

According to the police, on July 29, 2023, at about 10:45 pm, a police team conducted a special operation in the Bamboo Ridge community near Old Harbour.

The law enforcement officers stopped a motor vehicle, and a man alighted. The police searched him and found a Glock 19 pistol fitted with a magazine containing several rounds of 9-mm cartridges on his person.

The police arrested the man and escorted him to the Old Harbor police station on suspicion of possessing a prohibited weapon and unauthorized possession of ammunition.

The police are waiting to interview the suspect in the presence of his attorney before formally charging the suspect.

Further reporting suggested that the suspect was wanted by the police. Still yet, the police withheld his name.
