On this day in history, June 5, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt removed the US from the gold standard after requiring Americans to exchange their gold for cash. Then in 1974, President Gerald R. Ford signed legislation allowing Americans to own gold bullion again.

On this day in history, June 5, 1968, New York Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was on the presidential campaign trail as a Democratic candidate when an assassin fatally shot him at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California. The then New York legislator, better known as Bobby, was 42 at his death.
