Portmore police charged veteran Reggae Artist Ruffi Ann with illegal firearm possession.

Little known Dancehall artist Sharon Peterkin, o/c Ruffi-Ann, or Lady Shaba, and a co-accused are facing charges of possessing a prohibited weapon and possession of and trafficking marijuana after police found a pistol, ammo, and a quantity of marijuana at a house she occupies with her co-accused.

On Friday, June 2, 2023, Lady Shaba and her co-accused appeared in St Catherine Parish. The presiding judge denied Ruffi Ann’s bail application and granted her co-accused, Daniel Gutzmore, a bond of $300,000 and ordered that he hand over his travel documents and report to the Portmore police station once a week.

According to the indictment, on May 20, 2023, the police, armed with a warrant, searched a house owned by Ruffi Ann and her co-accused and found five pounds of ganja, two magazines with 19 cartridges of ammunition, and a pistol hidden in a drawer.

According to reports, Peterkin told the police she needed the firearm to protect herself because the firearm licensing authority confiscated her licensed pistol.

Both accused faced charges of illegal possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of ammunition, and possession of and trafficking of marijuana.

The presiding Judge, Desiree Alleyne, adjourned until June 16, 2023. If the court found them guilty, each accused could be looking at a minimum of 15 years in prison.
