On Thursday, April 27, 2023, Supreme Court Judge Justice Leighton Pusey temporarily varied the bail condition for music producer and politician Patrick Roberts, allowing him to travel on business. Roberts was before the Court for forgery, uttering forged documents, and conspiracy to defraud. He had been on station bail since 2021, but the Court had placed a stop order which barred him from traveling.
In addition, the Court increased Roberts’ bond from $300,000 to $600,000.
Roberts, the principal of the renowned recording studio and record label, ‘Shocking Vibes.’ He is also a local Government representative for the PNP’s West St. Andrew constituency.
His Attorney, Sayeed Bernard, said the reason he requested the Court to vary his client’s bail was to allow him to collect his passport so he can travel to the United States on Friday, April 28, 2023, and then to the UK before he returned to the island on May 22, 2023.
According to Bernard, the defense will return the passport to the custody of the Court on May 23, 2023. In pressing the Court to grant the request, Bernard emphasized that Roberts had his business established on the island and his family, and there was “little to no risk” of him fleeing the bond.
In granting the variation, however, Justice Pusey hastened to point out that the timing of the application for the variation placed the Court in a difficult position due to the nearness of the travel date.
The Court subsequently granted the request, allowing Roberts to travel and his bail extended.
