Police seized cocaine valued at US$600,000 at Norman Manley Airport.

The police have reported that, on Monday, January 2, 2023, they seized twelve pounds of cocaine at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica. 

The contraband was found in a suitcase during routine security checks. The briefcase was destined for the United States of America. 

The illicit drug found is estimated to have a street value of US$600,000.

A search was launched, and a suspect was apprehended in the Kingston 6 area.

He was arrested on reasonable suspicion of breaches of the dangerous drug act; however, his identity is being withheld pending further investigations.

Jamaica’s murder tally for 2022

Jamaica’s murder rate for 2022 has increased over 2021. According to the latest crime statistics provided by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), little Jamaica has recorded 1,498 murders in 2022.

St James led all parishes with a whopping 198 murders. Which makes it the deadliest parish in Jamaica.  

Next in line is St Catherine North with 145, then Westmoreland with 140. Finally, St Andrew South comes with 131, and St Catherine South with 113. 

Portland continues to be the safest and poorest parish onn the Island had with only 14, an increase of 2% over last year.

The murder tally for 2022 was 1,498 compared to 1,474 in 2021.
