The Police charged Detective Corporal Maurice Whittingham, 35, and 34-year-old construction worker Michael Daley with robbery with aggravation and kidnapping. The Police arrested the men following a question and answer session on Friday, December 24, 2022. A court date still needs to be set.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Saturday, December 17, 2022, along the Spanish Town bypass in St Catherine.
According to the Police, the men held up and robbed an International Truck transporting cooking from Seprod.
The lawmen said the truck was recovered in the Thetford community near Old Harbour.
The driver and sidemen were reportedly tied up but managed to escape and reported the matter to the Police. Both suspects were subsequently held in connection with the heist.
The investigators still need to establish the quantity of the cargo.
My grandmother used to say money is the corruptor of good conscience. Someone is wondering what could spur a Detective Corporal to hold up a delivery truck laden with cooking. Well, it is obvious money is the reason. He wanted money so badly that he was willing to risk his career and dignity.
Self-centeredness played a significant role too. We often get so obsessed with me that we forget our actions affect our families and us. I cannot begin to imagine the pain, shame, and disgrace Detective Corporal Whittingham’s family is going through. I am sure they are as puzzled as I am. And the big question on their lips is, WHY?
