Georgia Republican Senatorial candidate Herschel Walker speaks at a campaign event, Oct. 11, 2022, in Carrollton, Ga. Walker is running for election against Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock.

The hotly contested and divisive Georgia Senate race will be decided in a runoff on Dec. 6, 2022. Because non of the two top candidates, Warnock and Walker, will hit the required number of votes to be declared the winner.

Warnock leads the vote count with 20% remaining. Still, the preliminary estimate is that he would need more votes to push him over the threshold. Under Georgia state rules, the top two candidates go to a runoff if no candidates win more than 50% of the votes.

This hotly contested race could help to determine which party gets to control the Senate. Runoff elections are not uncommon in Georgia. Warnock won his ticket to the Senate in a runoff in 2020.
