The suspect in Eastern Portland Member of Parliament, Dr. Lynvale Bloomfield’s murder case was a no-show at the start of his trial in the Home Circuit Court Yesterday (November 2, 2022). Police are investigating whether the accused parents played a role in his disappearance.
On Wednesday, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn, who has been on a roll lately, instructed the investigator in the case to launch an in-depth investigation into whether the accused, Simeon Sutherland and his parents attempted to pervert the course of justice.
The police took the accused mother into custody. She was his surety. And she will remain in custody until the fine for the bail is paid.
The 23-year-old defendant is on $800,000 bail, and he was supposed to return to court Yesterday after his bail was extended on Monday. But Sutherland was not in attendance when the court was ready to proceed.
His attorney, Peter Champagnie, KC, stated that he was beyond surprised at the turn of events. He indicated that he met with the accused earlier at his office in his parents’ company.
Mr. Champagnie further told the court that based on what he was told, the couple had dropped off their son at the entrance to the court, but instead of going inside, he diverted.
Champagnie said the parents became suspicious of Sutherland’s movements and drove after him, but he managed to elude them.
The DPP also questioned whether the surety would return if she was allowed to leave.
