Sexual misconduct/sexual assault allegations have the JDF on its heels. Several women have filed complaints of sexual misconduct, including rape, fondling, and unwanted sexual advances against a senior army man who remains on the job. Many critics believe the allegations have placed the new army chief, Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman, in a precarious position. Because she has only been sitting at the helm since January.
According to a Gleaner report, the scandal started to unravel after the first female complained to her superior that she was sexually assaulted by a high-ranking officer (the name has been withheld). Soon after, other soldiers began coming forward with complaints.
The JDF has yet to issue a statement, (except that it launched a probe as soon as the report was received), or respond to queries. And it has not indicated whether it asked the police to investigate.
Some people are still determining whether the army will be transparent in its investigations. Others say the military has been shrouded under a culture of secrecy for decades, so it is unrealistic to expect anything to change.
