Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, Nancy Metayer-Bowen, was found unresponsive. Law enforcement have taken her husband, Stephen Bowen, into custody in connection with the incident.
Officers from the Coral Springs Police Department responded to Metayer-Bowen’s home at around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. There, they found her deceased with a gunshot wound to the head.
The police have taken her 40-year-old husband into custody. The preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was domestic in nature.
The Coral Springs Police Department Crimes Against Persons Unit (CAPS) is actively investigating the incident.
According to reports from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Stephen Bowen is currently in custody facing charges of premeditated murder. Additionally, law enforcement accused Stephen Bowenof tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
No bond has been set for the murder charge. However, a bond of $50,000 has been established for the tampering charge.
Metayer-Bowen was Coral Springs’ first Black and Haitian American female commissioner. She was appointed vice mayor by her fellow commissioners following her re-election as a commissioner in 2024.
Before entering politics, Metayer-Bowen worked as an environmental scientist.
Numerous members of the Jamaican community in South Florida, including the Mayor of Miramar, Denise Grant, have praised the vice mayor. They also expressed their sadness at her passing.
Former Global Jamaica Diaspora Council member Dr. Allan Cunningham, who interacted with her on several occasions, described her as a truly “nice person” who cared deeply about her community.
Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, Oliver Mair, also expressed regret over her killing. He told The Gleaner that he had worked with her on numerous occasions: “She was a really nice person who had the interest of her community at heart.”
