Lawyer warns social media about speculation concerning Mrs. Silvera’s death.

King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie is cautioning social media users to adhere solely to the factual information regarding the ongoing investigation into the death of Melissa Silvera. He expresses deep concern that unchecked discussions on social media could have a detrimental impact on the young children of the victim.

Champagnie, along with his co-counsel Richard Lynch, has been engaged by the “immediate family members” of Jolyan Silvera, the former People’s National Party member of parliament for St Mary Western and the husband of the deceased. This legal representation comes in light of the autopsy’s conclusion, which states that Melissa Silvera died due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Initially, it was reported that Silvera passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on November 10, 2023.

In a statement issued recently, Champagnie remarked, “While I understand the public’s interest in this distressing situation and the desire for transparency, I implore individuals to exercise caution on social media and refrain from disseminating speculative or inaccurate details. It is crucial to consider the circumstantial complexities, especially with regard to the young children of the family. Let the law enforcement agencies impartially carry out their investigation without any preconceived notions.”

Champagnie also clarified that Mr. Silvera is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation and is not being treated as a suspect. He emphasized that he refrained from making further comments on the matter.

The couple had three children together. Tragically, one of their twin boys drowned in a pool at their St Andrew residence in 2017.

It has been revealed that three bullet fragments were discovered within Silvera’s body.

This revelation emerged a month after reports initially surfaced that she had passed away in her sleep.

Following this latest development, the People’s National Party (PNP) has refrained from making public statements.

A source within the party disclosed to The Gleaner that the leadership remains unaware of all the facts surrounding the case and has decided not to issue a statement at this time.

A St Elizabeth woman is facing several wounding charges

A woman from St. Elizabeth is currently in police custody after allegedly using a weapon to harm multiple women in the parish in December 2023.

The individual in question has been identified as Moya Beckford and has been charged with several offenses related to the act of causing harm.

During a recent court appearance at the St. Elizabeth Parish Court, it was revealed by the prosecution that the case file is still pending completion. Consequently, the presiding judge ordered that she be kept in custody until January 25, 2024.

According to the prosecution’s account presented in court, Beckford engaged in a violent episode, purportedly using a sharp object to stab several women along Main Street in Black River on December 7, 2023.

The number of women injured was not revealed by the prosecution. However, reports suggest that they sustained wounds to their backs and foreheads.

Following Beckford’s arrest, the police discovered and confiscated items in her possession, labeling them as “cocaine pipes.”

Subsequently, Beckford was charged by the police in relation to the alleged assault on the women.

Road Safety Chief Pleads With Motorists to Use Safe Driving Rules

Vice-chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Dr. Lucien Jones, is once again reinforcing his urgent appeal for the public to strictly adhere to road safety standards.

These remarks were made in light of the tragic passing of 23-year-old Shadedra Williams in a motor vehicle accident on the Mandela Highway, which occurred on Saturday, December 16, 2023.

Having recently returned to the island after successfully completing her studies at the University of South Florida in the United States, Williams’ untimely demise serves as a stark reminder of the criticality of road safety measures.

Dr. Jones earnestly implores all road users to genuinely heed the warnings issued by the NRSC.

While acknowledging the substantial progress made through the enactment of the Road Traffic Act and this year’s introduction of a new ticketing system, Dr. Jones emphasizes the vital importance of drivers adhering to safety standards for both roads and vehicles.

Concurrently, Dr. Jones underscores that the responsibility for maintaining the safety of the nation’s roads also falls upon each individual and collective group, in addition to the dedicated efforts of the NRSC.

Let us not forget our crucial role in ensuring a safe and secure road environment.
