US visitor killed, as she traveled in a vehicle from Meadowrest.

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, a US visitor who came to the Island to attend a funeral was shot and killed by a lone gunman who opened fire on the vehicle she was traveling in from the Meadowrest Memorial Gardens in Spanish Town, St. Catherine. One other passenger in the car got injured in the incident.

The authorities identified the dead woman as Shirnet Harmond, 57, from Brooklyn, New York. The injured man, who is 23, has been released from hospital.

According to reporting, at about 3:00 p.m., both persons were among patrons leaving a burial when a gunman attacked the vehicle they were traveling in.

Police said upon reaching the Red Pond community, the attacker stepped into the roadway and opened fire at the motor vehicle, hitting Harmond in the head and upper body, and the man in the right hand before escaping. 

Hospital officials pronounced Harmond dead on arrival and treated and released the man.

The police did not establish a motive for the attack. 

Police charged a 19-year-old cabinet maker with possession of a firearm.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – On Saturday, September 23, 2023, the police charged a suspect with breaches of the Firearms Act, after they found a loaded pistol at a premises he occupied during an operation.

The police charged Danville Watt, age 19, a cabinet maker of Riversdale Drive in New Haven, Duhaney Park, Kingston 20, with possession of a prohibited weapon and 

unauthorized possession of ammunition.

According to a release from the Duhaney Park Police, at about 5:30 a.m., law enforcement officers conducted an operation in the community.

The police searched premises occupied by the suspect and found one Taurus .38 Revolver loaded with four .38 rounds of ammunition and one twelve gauge cartridge.

The police arrested and charged Watt. His court date is pending.
