PM Holness is expected to reshuffle his Cabinet soon

Trending in Jamaica News

From all indications, and based on reports via Observer, Prime Minister Andrew Holness is getting ready to do a long overdue cabinet reshuffle by the end of December or early next year.

This begs the question: What took him so long to realize that his Cabinet needed a make-over the day after he announced it in 2020. Sometimes politicians allow loyalty to underperforming party loyalists to hinder the promise and stifle the vision they presented to the people who elected them.

At least three government ministers are at the top of most Jamaicans’ list of underperformers. And there have been mounting calls for the PM to send them to the back of the room or transfer them to other, more suitable ministries. But all of those calls have fallen on deaf ears until now.

The current Minister of National Security is definitely in over his head in this ministry. And even though he has management experience, having served as a minister before, he is unsuitable for National Security. Therefore, the Prime Minister blundered big time; when he named a medical doctor who had made quite an illustrious political career as Minister of Health in more than one government as Minister of National Security.

Dr. the Honorable Christopher, Minister of Health, has a solid background in management. He graduated from the University of the West Indies, where he received a degree in Management Studies, and Georgia State University, where he received a degree in Marketing. In addition, he received his Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. So, this man is more than capable. He also served as an agriculture and commerce minister in previous governments, where he did exceptionally well. But his recent haphazard handling of the Victoria Jubilee Hospital scandal renders him unsuitable to continue as the Minister of Health.

Mrs. Fayval Williams is an investment banker who has previously served as technology minister and minister without portfolio in the Finance Ministry. She is more than able to do the job. But she is not suitable for education.

Furthermore, her mishandling of the Oberlin situation should disqualify her from being the Minister of Education. It appears she needed to research Oberlin High School’s foundation before making facetious remarks.
