WASHINGTON, DC, United States–The Biden administration has clearly stated its unwavering support for the sovereignty of Guyana and emphasized the importance of a peaceful resolution to the ongoing land boundary dispute with Venezuela.

In a significant statement, the US Department of State shared Secretary Antony J. Blinken’s discussion with Guyanese President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, where they reiterated the significance of upholding the 1899 arbitral award regarding the land boundary. Additionally, both parties acknowledged and respected the International Court of Justice’s order to refrain from any actions that could potentially escalate the dispute further.

Given recent developments pertaining to Venezuela’s claim on the mineral-rich Essequibo region, the Guyana government has outlined its plans to bring the border issue before the United Nations. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s announcement of measures enforcing the outcome of a referendum aimed at claiming ownership of the area is seen by Guyana as a direct threat to its territorial integrity.

In response, Guyana intends to intensify precautionary measures to safeguard its national interests. Moreover, the government is determined to take appropriate action by bringing this pressing matter to the attention of the United Nations Security Council. The gravity of the situation necessitates swift and decisive steps to ensure a just resolution.
