KINGSTON, Jamaica–According to Judicial Scoop, a St. Catherine man who pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorized possession of ammunition under the new Firearms Act was sentenced to life imprisonment by a judge in the Gun Court.
He is Eric Murray, aged 26, of a March Road address in Spanish Town, St. Catherine. The judge handed down the sentence on October 26, 2023.
Murray is the first convict to be sentenced to life under the new Firearms Act.
Additionally, he received nine years for unauthorized possession of ammunition.
Nevertheless, the life sentence is a sham because Murray is eligible for parole once he has served 15 years.
The allegation stated that at about 9:35 p.m. on December 24, 2022, law enforcement officers were on patrol in the March Pen Road section of Spanish Town when they spotted a group of men assembled near a section in the community known as Big Tree.
Upon seeing the police, Murray broke away from the group, and the officers pursued him.
During the chase, the officers observed Murray remove a firearm from his waistband and drop it to the ground.
The police apprehended Murray and recovered the firearm, which they identified as a Taurus 9mm pistol fitted with a magazine containing 13 cartridges.
The officers arrested Murray and took him to the Spanish Town police station, where they charged him.
The authorities brought Murray before the St. Catherine Parish Court. The presiding judge transferred the case to the Gun Court.
Laborer crushed beneath reversing truck in St Thomas.
On Thursday, November 2, 2023, a Duhaney Park resident met his demise tragically when he was crushed beneath a reversing truck in 10 Miles Bull Bay, St Thomas.
The police have identified him as Owen Bunsie, 69 years old, a laborer from Duhaney Park in Kingston 20.
A report from the Yallahs Police stated that at approximately 3:20 p.m., Bunsie was standing at a section of the road while the driver of a white Kenworth motor truck was reversing. The loaded reversing truck reportedly crushed Bunsie to death.
Hospital authorities pronounced him dead upon arrival.
The police said investigations are ongoing.
